Vintage, Antique, and Classic Motorcycles - 1962 Harley-Davidson XLCH Sportster
|
This is my 1962 Harley-Davidson XLCH Sportster (900cc). This bike has been heavily modified from stock. I purchased it in 2001 and brought it home in about 7 cardboard boxes. Even the engine had been disassembled. It took me about 13 months to get it all together and back on the road. The neck was raked to 40 degrees and the forks are 10" over stock. Most of the original sheetmetal was thrown out and new stuff added. The swing arm went out the window long ago and a hardtail was welded in to replace it. The paint is testors #1630 Jade Green Metal Flake and was painted by me. The forward controls/footboards are my own design and fabrication. So is the seat mount. I have a King/Queen style seat for it, but opted for the sprung solo seat as a concession to age. The rear wheel is a 16" and the front is 21" The engine was rebuilt about 4100 miles ago and is .050 over. After running the 6 volt system for about 4 months, I converted to a 12 volt system out of a 1965 sportster. The lighting is much better! The motor is kickstart only (ALWAYS follow through, your knee will love you) and is powered by a Fairbanks-Morse Magneto in an aftermarket housing. (I wanted the key lock on the Magneto)
