2006 Americade Motorcycle Rally Blog - Day 4

By Walter Kern

This year I'm publishing highlights of Americade 2006, day by day in this blog. Americade is scheduled for June 5-10 this year. The blog will also include my preparation in getting ready to take the ride to Lake George, NY, my observations while there, the ride home, and getting back to normal -- before the next set of rides to the Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) Wing Ding national rally in Nashville, TN and the BuRP rally in Maggie Valley, NC. (BuRP is a rally for Motorcycles forum members.)

The last day before leaving for a rally is always busy. We would do the same amount of work in packing the trikes for a 5-day trip as we would for a trip of 21 days. Just need to find more room for underwear and T-shirts for the 21 day trip. The picture shows Jane at about 8:30 p.m. using a bungee net to secure luggage to the rear luggage rack. Most of the packing of the two trikes is already done. We'll have to add some last minutes items tomorrow and then double check all the bungee nets to make sure nothing will be falling off. The Packing List did come in handy. Jane even printed off a copy for herself without my encouragement.

I was able to use my main computer today to finish a few more Motorcycle User Reviews. I published 28 this afternoon but only for Yamaha and Suzuki models. The rest will have to wait until after Americade.

We will be heading out to the trikes at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow. First will be a gas stop and then we'll head up Route 18 to Route 9 North and then to I287. We'll stop near Morristown, NJ at a rest stop to pick up Barbara, Marion, and Adrianne. Marion will also be on a trike so we'll have three Gold Wing trikes, one Honda PC-800, and one Gold Wing 2-wheeler.

Last year the weather was great until we got within five miles of Lake George and then suddenly the skies got black and the rain came down as hard as it can, accompanied by lightning. It was too late to stop to put rain suits on so we continued on to the headquarters of Americade where the registration was to be held. We entered the parking lot and backed into a couple of spots near the entrance. Just then, we saw the official Americade videographer running toward us. He pushed the camera in my face just as I lifted my face shield and wanted my opinion of this special beginning to Americade. As it turned out, both Jane and I made the first 10 minutes of the 2005 Americade video, soaked to the skin. Hopefully, we will have better weather this year.

Something unexpected always happens at Americade. Read my 10 Ways to Enjoy Americade to find out what to do at Americade. Maybe I'll have a few more things to add to my article after this year's rally. You just never know...

Tomorrow, we get on the trikes to travel to Americade.
