Beetles and Bikes Part 5 - The Bike Bug In 1989, I went on a trip to my hometown in Illinois. After watching my nephew with his BMW motorcycle and seeing and talking to a Gold Wing rider at my motel on the way back to New Jersey, I knew that the Motorcycle Bug had struck. I turned to my wife and said, "I think it's time we both learned how to ride." She agreed and thus began a series of events and adventures that has led to the creation of this site and forum. The first article I wrote on the old About Motorcycles site documents the beginnings of my motorcycle adventure. Well, my garage used to be filled with VW Bugs. I had them for a total of 17 years. Now my garage is filled with motorcycles. The one car I have left is sitting on the drive. Much fun was had by my entire family as we drove the three Bugs. They were part of the family. The kids are now married with families of their own. The three Bugs are gone too. All the millions of Bugs belonging to people all over the world will be gone in the next decade or two. No new ones will be built after this summer. Time is moving, technology is moving, and we will never step again into the same stream. For me, I have the memories of the Gray Bug, the Blue Bug, and the White Bug tied to my family life. I've included a few family pictures of these three great cars to illustrate this story. Can the Motorcycle Bug survive for 17 years like my VW Bug ownership did? I hope so. One thing I'm certain about -- I'm having just as much fun with motorcycles as I did with my VW cars. So, stick around. Read my daily Motorcycle Views Blog, subscribe to my Motorcycle Views Newsletter, and read and contribute to my Motorcycle Views Forum. We all have the Motorcycle Bug and no one will be stopping production of that Bug anytime soon.
